What is a Hurricance Storm Surge?

A storm surge is usually meant as essentially a wall of water that is created out by a hurricane. The storm surge could be as destructive as the hurricane itself and will start flooding the low-lying areas. The water levels will rise by as much as 4 to 8 feet above ground level as a result of storm surge. The surge may be accompanied by large, destructive, and life-threatening waves near the coastal areas.
In its simplest terms a storm surge is a bulge of water that a hurricane pushes out in all directions as it passes over the ocean. In extreme cases adding to the flood water a storm surge can be more than 20 feet like Katrina in 2005. The effect of storm surge may vary tremendously from one place to another.
Most people die when they come out to floodwaters and make their way through floodwaters in search of a shelter and need to get out of flood water. But the national security agencies suggest that it is better to wait for the rescue team for help and get them evacuated.
