National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA) in UAE

His Excellency Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithy is the General Manager of National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA) and it is designed to benefit the UAE in particular as well as other countries in the Middle East. UAE's national leadership is treating crisis and emergency management with much importance. The objective of the NCEMA is to enable the region to gain from the international pool of knowledge, expertise and experience in coordinating and managing crisis and to raise local and regional awareness about the need for a coordinated approach to crisis and emergency management.

The NCEMA is expected to provide countries and organizations in the region innovative and practical ideas about coordinating local, national and regional responses to crises and emergencies. Asserting that the UAE and other countries in the Middle East have considerable expertise and are well equipped to tackle crises and emergencies, gaps are primarily in coordinating large-scale responses, and NCEMA initiative will result in strengthening awareness in the region about crisis and emergency management and in new national and cross-border efforts to define and formulate coordinated approaches to disasters, both natural and man-made.'

The NCEMA chief emphasized that crisis preparedness cannot be achieved without the close cooperation between government bodies, the public and private sector, and individuals and NGOs. 'We believe that the NCEMA in Abu Dhabi will draw representatives of all such local and regional organizations for a robust interaction with their counterparts from other parts of the world. We also believe that this will result in serious introspection in the region about the need to fill its gaps in information, knowledge and implementation in the area of crisis and emergency management,' he said. Noting that the rapid pace of economic growth in the region and the transformation of the cities in UAE as major centers of business and tourism are essential elements of progress, he added that rapid transformation brings its own challenges and threats.

'Governments all over the world today are battling a host of such challenges and globalised threats - such as cross-border health risks, terrorism, cyber threats and crimes, money laundering, human and drug trafficking, natural and environmental disasters. It is in the face of such threats and challenges that countries around the world have begun to develop comprehensive strategies and plans to tackle crisis and emergency situations. In this context, it is a matter of great pride for us that the UAE is taking the initiative in this region to strengthen crisis and emergency preparedness,' he said.
