Internet users in Dubai have to be vigilant. In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Etisalat has launched a campaign against the use of illegal VPN proxy softwares that allow users to surf the prohibited sites by the UAE law and without disclosing the actual IP address. Such softwares are used mostly by Indians and Pakistanis to enable them to surf the community websites like Orkut and some keywords in You Tube. Using such softwares is a cyber crime as it blocks the real IP address of the system. International criminals and terrorists were using these softwares to send messages over the internet as it will prevent authorities from finding the source of the message. With the help of improving IT technologies VOIP enables the users to call most European countries for free and Asian countries for cheap rates. VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) softwares which are allowed internationally are used mostly by Asians to call their home countries from Gulf countries including UAE. Etisalat is the leading internet service provider (ISP) in United Arab Emirates with home internet users brand named Al Shamil of 500,000 and they have banned using the VPN proxy softwares as well as VOIP softwares. In last few days the Etisalat authorities are investigating such cases and they have made searches in different areas of UAE including the bachelor accommodations of Deira residents.
Companies based in Europe are providing most VOIP services over the internet and the call rates to India from United Arab Emirates is as low as 10 fils and is popular among Indians. Although the UAE hasn’t banned using VOIP but at the same time using it commercially and providing the service to public is against the law. One can use it in his personal computer with prior permission the ISP. Etisalat banned it because it will affect the telephone calls made by the users and there by the income level of Etisalat. The community sites like Orkut and You Tube are not blocked by the other ISP Du Telecom which is available in Free Zones in UAE. People started using the banned VPN proxies largely when Etisalat blocked VOIP softwares and VOIP websites. As there is law prevailing to curtail the use of VPN proxies Etisalat has launched searches to capture the violators. If the violators are got caught they will get jail term and fines as per the law. Reports are saying that they can track the use of such softwares very easily. Etisalat request people to refrain such softwares and promoting them.
