How to setup Outlook to connect to the Etisalat Mail Server

POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is a standard protocol for receiving e-mails. POP3 is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by the Internet server. Periodically, you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box on the server and download any mail. An alternative protocol is Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).

With IMAP, you view your e-mail at the server as though it was on your client computer. An e-mail message deleted locally is still on the server. E-mail can be kept on and searched at the server. POP can be thought of as a "store-and-forward" service. IMAP can be thought of as a remote file server.

POP and IMAP deal with the receiving of e-mail and are not to be confused with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), a protocol for transferring e-mail across the Internet. You send e-mail with SMTP and a mail handler receives it on your recipient's behalf. Then the mail is read using POP or IMAP.

There are two options for configuring Outlook to use it for exchange e-mail with colleagues and friends or join newsgroups to trade ideas and information.

1. If Outlook has not been run since it was installed, the Outlook Startup Wizard is used to add the POP3 mail account.

2. If an Outlook account has been added, the Mail Setup tool in Outlook Express is used to add the POP3 mail account.

This basically means that your computer might already be using Outlook for your home emails, or you might not have used it before.

Using Outlook Express to configure an POP3 Mail account:

The following procedure explains how to configure an Etisalat POP3 Mail account using the Mail Setup tool. The process is nearly identical if you are using the Outlook Startup Wizard.

Please follow the below steps:

  1. Open Outlook Express, click on Tools - Accounts and select Mail
  2. Click on Add button and choose the Mail option
  3. Enter the name to display when you send the mail. Then click Next
  4. Enter the e-mail address provided by Etisalat. Then click Next
  5. Select incoming mail server as POP3. Then click Next
  6. Enter Incoming Mail server: mail.emirates.net.ae
  7. Enter Outgoing Mail server: mail.emirates.net.ae Then click Next
  8. Enter username: (Give the username provided by your ISP)
  9. Enter password: (Password given by you at the time of registration with ISP). Then click Next 10. Click Finish to save the Account settings.

If you want to keep a copy of them on the server before downloading emails you have two options:

1) Using POP3 you can configure your email client to "leave messages on server". Or
2) Using IMAP you can view your messages directly on the server without the need for downloading them.
